Prospective Head Movement Correction for High-resolution MRI Using a Single Camera
نویسندگان
چکیده
Introduction The image quality of brain MRI scans can be compromised by head motion. Prospective motion correction based on external tracking systems has been proposed to ameliorate this issue. Stereo optical tracking systems have been shown to give good real-time motion correction with reasonable accuracy [1,2]. However, the accurate calibration for the stereo system as well as the calibration between the stereo and MRI system are rather complicated and time consuming. So a method that does not require calibration and can work with just a single video camera was proposed [3]. It needed, however, a tracking target to be fixed on the forehead of the volunteer. We therefore propose here a motion correction method for MRI that doesn’t need any tracking target but just uses facial features directly from the volunteer.

Prospective motion correction of 3D echo-planar imaging data for functional MRI using optical tracking
We evaluated the performance of an optical camera based prospective motion correction (PMC) system in improving the quality of 3D echo-planar imaging functional MRI data. An optical camera and external marker were used to dynamically track the head movement of subjects during fMRI scanning. PMC was performed by using the motion information to dynamically update the sequence's RF excitation and ...

INTRODUCTION – Correction of head motion artifacts is essential for clinically acceptable image quality. This is especially important for long scans, such as DTI, fMRI, and high-resolution structural scans. Prospective motion-correction using stereovision systems [1,2] have been suggested to perform real-time head motion-correction without necessitating the acquisition of additional MR-based na...
متن کاملMeasurement and Correction of Microscopic Head Motion during Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Brain
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a widely used method for non-invasive study of the structure and function of the human brain. Increasing magnetic field strengths enable higher resolution imaging; however, long scan times and high motion sensitivity mean that image quality is often limited by the involuntary motion of the subject. Prospective motion correction is a technique that addresses t...
متن کاملProspective head-movement correction for high-resolution MRI using an in-bore optical tracking system.
In MRI of the human brain, subject motion is a major cause of magnetic resonance image quality degradation. To compensate for the effects of head motion during data acquisition, an in-bore optical motion tracking system is proposed. The system comprises two MR-compatible infrared cameras that are fixed on a holder right above and in front of the head coil. The resulting close proximity of the c...
متن کاملAre Movement Artifacts in Magnetic Resonance Imaging a Real Problem?—A Narrative Review
Movement artifacts compromise image quality and may interfere with interpretation, especially in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) applications with low signal-to-noise ratio such as functional MRI or diffusion tensor imaging, and when imaging small lesions. High image resolution has high sensitivity to motion artifacts and often prolongs scan time that again aggravates movement artifacts. Durin...
